For this group
assignment, we were required to plan and design our dream scale-model. My group members were Amy and Tan Xi Chen. We were given four weeks to
design the space and come out with the plan of the space and bill of quantity
(BQ). We need to collect all the information from shops or online to obtain the
prices and specifications of the items that we want to put into our space.
This project is
to be done in group (maximum 4 people). Plan and design the layout of a single
floor residential home. Our client is an actor, Dwayne Johnson. Our layout must include 3 different
space functions and one different space function for 1 person of the group.
DESIGN CONCEPT
At first, we
found out Dwayne Johnson hobbies which are working out, eating, fishing and so
on. So, we decided to create 3 spaces which are gym room for him to work out,
kitchen for him to cook and eat, and living room for him to have meeting and
discuss important stuff with his clients or agents. I was to design gym room,
Amy was to design kitchen and Chen was to design living room.
DESIGN INSPRIRATION
We
decided to make an industrial style space for him because he likes things to be
exposed so industrial style most suitable for him because industrial style
space include exposed bricks, water pipes and so on. The site that we choose
for the house is at lakeside because he likes fishing.
FUNCTION AND USES
As
I involved in designing gym room for him, so I have studied his workout
routine. He repeatedly using few workout equipment so his personal gym room
will not be as big as the public gym room.
He
also mentioned that he likes sunlight. So in the gym room, I changed some walls
into glass panels so that he can enjoy the sunlight while working out and enjoy
the view of the lake.
FINISHES
The
gym room that I designed is a rectangular shape space, some walls I used glass
panels and some walls I used exposed bricks to create an aesthetic effect yet
bring out industrial style. The flooring used floating hardwood floor because
it easily install and most importantly is it will not break like tiles as gym
equipment will frequently hit the floor like dumbbell. On top of floating
hardwood floor, I also used gym floor mat to reduce the impact to the floor.
After
we designed the space, we went to some shops, such as, HomePro, Ikea, Index
Living Mall to find out the items or furniture or furnishes that we want to
design the house for Dwayne Johnson, we got the price for all the items that we
want.

Structure
For this group

PROCESS
First and foremost, we made base
formwork. We used MDF board and wrapped it up with plastic wrapping paper to
avoid the MDF from absorbing the water from concrete mixture. After that, we
did formwork with modelling board and wrap it up with duct tape for the same
purpose which is avoiding the modelling board from absorbing water from
concrete so that the formwork will not be destroyed. We also cut the wire gauze
according to the formwork size and place it into the formwork to increase the
strength of the concrete so that the concrete slab will not break easily. We
added the wire gauze for column also.
After we done the base
formwork, we mix cement and water to form concrete. When the suitable density
the mixture has reached, we poured the mixture into the formwork. We shake the
MDF board to allow the mixture occupy evenly.
After 3 days, the concrete
has dried and became solid. We did
column formwork with modelling board. The column formworks are as well wrapped
it with duct tape to avoid the column from absorbing water. After that we mixed
and pouring the mixture into the column formworks.
After 1 week, we did beam
formworks with modelling board and tied the beam wire gauze with the column
wire gauze. To create the support for the beam formworks, we added some small L shape angle. Under the beam, we did
some stands to create support in case the beam formworks fall due to overload.
After the beam concrete is
completely dried, we did similar stands but different height to support the
following slab formworks. We did the formworks with modelling board and wrapped
it with duct tape as well.
After 1 week from casting
base slab, columns, beams, and roof slab, we started doing internal structures
and furniture. For me, I’m doing gym room, so I did flooring, windows and gym
equipment.
And it’s all done!
IMPROVEMENT
Some columns are not 90
degree because the materials of formworks we used is not suitable, we should
have use wood instead of modelling board and also duct tape cannot be used
because the concrete is very dusty and we did not clean it so some columns that
supported by duct tape were not 90 degree.
