This project aims to increase awareness on Building Services usage (ie electricity, water etc) and its impact on the environment. We were to keep a 1 week detailed journal of our usage of utilities and quantify the impact and benchmark it against a green evaluation tool. Document and map out the associated details of these existing building services, for the green re-designing process involved in Assignment 2.

PART 2
Based on findings from Assignment 1, I am required to re-design and make changes to the building services of my studied space, my room. The objective is to create a space with improved aesthetics and eco-friendliness, without making significant changes to the users’ habits.
This is my plan view of my room before re-designing.
The mission of this project is to achieve the eco-friendliness of the space and solve the biggest problem of the room, which is hot air accumulation in my room, because my room is at the top floor of the house. The challenge of this re-designing project is to retain most of the furniture and some elements of the existing space. For example, the design of the plaster ceiling edges and design of the floor tiles. Another objective is to improve the aesthetic of the room.
In my old room plan, I separated my room
layout into three main areas, which are sleeping areas, working areas, and
amusement areas. After redesigning based on my personal daily schedule, I
exchanged the working areas with the sleeping areas because I will not be in my
room during broad daylight, I go to school every day and stay back at school
until late night to avoid traffic jam.
First, to reduce the hot air accumulate at
the top floor, an attic fans is
installed at the roof. Sun is also one of the main sources of heat to my room,
so, I placed some plants at the outside of the window to allow the plants release moisture into the air
through the process of transpiration. I also applied frosted paper on windows
to reduce the penetration of heat to reduce excess heat, and glare and increase
the privacy. Also, I changed the curtain
with light colour to reduce the heat absorption. For the room, I also repaint
the wall to white colour to look
brighter and cleaner.
For the furniture, I want to remain is the bed, bedside tables, working tables, and
display racks because all are still useable. These furnitures are black in
colour so some parts I paint it with white acrylic paint and finish with clear
acrylic lacquer to create contrast.
At the sleeping area, according to Fengshui,
bed should place beside window so that in the morning the user can receive the
energy of the nature. And bed position should allow the user to easily see the
door based on Fengshui. Therefore, the position of the bed is placed so.
At the working area, I placed a pegboard on the wall to hang my
accessories, such as, stationaries and tools. I also DIY a notice board on the wall by sticking white foamboard on the wall to allow for
sticking paper. Also, I moved the three
racks and changed a new cabinets from Ikea that has multiple
functions which can store stuffs and has a laying spot so that whenever I work
till tired can have a chilling spot.
At the amusement area, it placed a drum
set, but I removed it because it accumulates dust and heat as that area is a
low ventilation area. So, I changed that area become a reading area. In this
area, I want some coziness so I applied wallpaper
at that area and placed a rug on the
floor. Also, I placed the three existing display
racks into the corner and modified one display rack to create a more stylish
furniture. I also mounted an existing TV
on wall and mount a new TV cabinet
under the TV. And a beanbag is
bought.
To achieve the eco-friendliness of the
room, I changed the electrical appliances to eco-friendly electrical appliances
that I found in the Home Design and Interior Exhibition 2018 at KLCC. First,
the air-conditioner I want to change to the Mitsubishi Electric Air
Conditioners because the company release a new series of air-con, called JP
series, this series is achieving powerful cooling with high energy efficiency
to bring optimal comfort. Additionally, the air-conditional is using R32
refrigerant which is far less global warming potential than other refrigerant,
which is more eco-friendly.
Next, I placed one Perfectaire Unico air-circulator at the working area.
Whenever, the weather is not that hot, I can turn on the fan without switching
on air-con. This circulator is using vortex technology, which can create a
continuously refreshed atmosphere. Also, the air-circulator is placed so
because the air flow of the circulator can go up to 10 feet distance, so I can
switch on the circulator while air-con is on and bring the coolness to the
reading area.
I also changed the existing ceiling fans to Panasonic F-M14HWVBSQH 4 blades fans. The fans is ECONAVI
featured and using DC Motor Technology, which are electricity saving features
and save up to 64% of electricity.
